“ORLANDO” - Original artwork series
This series of original artworks was inspired by Virginia Woolf's masterpiece novel “Orlando”, which explores the evolution of gender identity through its protagonist, a young, male nobleman in the Elizabethan era that, midway through the narrative, transforms into a woman.
Carlo Pavan uses the natural element of the volcano as a metaphor of our many unstable and fluid selves, constantly mutating and slipping into each other, still maintaining elements of continuity. In these artworks, lava and its eruption suggest the urge of our true selves to come to the surface. The use of gold is a reference to the Japanese art of kintsugi, and to the beauty and healing power of letting our true selves out through the cracks of social constructs.

“THE WAVES” - Original artwork series
This series of original textured acrylic artworks takes its title from the central recurring metaphor in Virginia Woolf’s book “The Waves”, where the ebb and flow of consciousness and human connection mirrors the cyclical rise and fall of ocean waves. Carlo Pavan creates individual unique art pieces (no two are the same), where the element of the ocean water takes centre stage, combining metallic blue undertones and textured titanium white foam.
“I’ve worked as a performer at sea for many years and the views of the ocean always fascinated and inspired me. The purity and force of the element of water. The instant connection between the rhythm of the tide and our heartbeats. ‘The blue that cures the human blues’, as I like to say. Rarely I felt such a connection with any other element in nature.” (Carlo Pavan)
